MixOS is where desktop, mesh and agents meet. Compositor, apps, mail server, web server and DNS all speak ABP, one message protocol. Mix drives all of it from one shell. A service on another continent is just another port.
MixOS nodes join a WireGuard mesh, and noded carries bus traffic between them. Being on the mesh is the authorisation: every verb of every app can be reached from any member node, with no extra gate.
-- run the same probe on two nodes, no quoting for $node in ["beta", "gamma"] $r = ssh_mix($node, "print(mix_version().string)") print($node .. " " .. trim($r.stdout)) end beta 0.109.2 gamma 0.109.2
Every architectural decision is checked against three criteria. A change that advances none of them probably doesn't belong. A change that works against any of them almost certainly doesn't.
Services describe their own verbs and properties as structured data. Mix reads its manual from its own binary.
One uniform property surface across daemons. Change things through verbs and property writes, not by editing files.
The build is agent-operable, every binary reports its own provenance, and the system can rebuild parts of itself.
One language, one wire format, one shell. Duplicated logic merges, and parallel mechanisms collapse into one.
MixOS's own code is MIT. Dependencies must pass a permissive-licence allowlist. It learns from COSMIC's designs but never copies its code.
The goal is a system that observes, repairs and improves itself, with an agent as a first-class operator.
Every daemon, library and app. One Cargo workspace.
Wayland protocol and rendering for the compositor, following cosmic-comp's design, reimplemented independently.
Desktop furniture and native applications, all from one toolkit.
The mesh transport between nodes.
The shell, glue, automation language and control surface.
CosMix proved the ideas: a daily-driver desktop, a mesh of real services, and Mix as the login shell on every node. MixOS rebuilds them into a tree designed to last. Each component moves on its own, gets cleaned up on the way, and brings its tests with it.
